Here are some general rules for using commas in American English: 👉 Use commas to separate items in a series or list. For example: "I need to buy eggs, milk, and bread."  There's no need to add commas in this case, since It's not a list of things: "I need to buy coffee and milk".  👉 Use a comma to separate two independent clauses that are joined by a coordinating conjunction (and, but, or, nor, for, yet, so). For example: "She went to the store, but she forgot her wallet."
