Let, let’s

💬 Let: permission - We use let to talk about permission. Let is followed by an object and an infinitive without to. Examples:
Usamos let para falar sobre permissão. Let é seguido por um objeto e um infinitivo sem to. Exemplos:

👉 She let me look at the photos. Not: She let me to look …
Ela me deixou olhar as fotos.

👉 She’d live on pizzas if we let her.
Ela viveria de pizzas se a deixássemos.

👉 If Mom lets us go to the movies without her, I’ll be surprised.
Se a mamãe nos deixar ir ao cinema sem ela, ficarei surpreso.

👉 Old McDonald lets the animals on his farm move freely.
O velho McDonald permite que os animais de sua fazenda se movam livremente.

👉 
The arrangement of tables in the restaurant lets you have very little privacy.
A disposição das mesas no restaurante permite que você tenha muito pouca privacidade.



💭Warning: We don’t use let in the passive with this meaning.
Aviso: não usamos let in passive com este significado.


👉 They didn’t let us take photographs inside the theatre. (or We weren’t allowed to take photographs …) 
Not: We weren’t let (to) take photographs
Eles não nos deixaram tirar fotos dentro do teatro. (ou não tínhamos permissão para tirar fotos ...)


💬 Let’s, let: suggestions, offers, imperatives

Let us is the first-person plural imperative, which we only use in very formal situations. Let’s is the short form, which we often use to make suggestions which include ourselves. Examples:
Let us é o imperativo da primeira pessoa do plural, que só usamos em situações muito formais. Let’s é a forma abreviada, que costumamos usar para fazer sugestões que incluem a nós mesmos. Exemplos:


👉 It’s midday. Let’s stop now and have some lunch, shall we?
Not: Lets stop now …
É meio-dia. Vamos parar agora e almoçar, certo?

👉 Okay. We’re all ready. Let’s go.
OK. Estamos todos prontos. Vamos lá.


We also use let me (the first-person singular imperative) to give a direct, more formal suggestion or offer. Example:
Também usamos let me (o imperativo da primeira pessoa do singular) para dar uma sugestão ou oferta direta e mais formal. Exemplo:


👉 Let me move these books out of your way.
Deixe-me tirar esses livros da sua frente.

We use let for third person imperatives and for impersonal imperatives. Example:
Usamos let para imperativos de terceira pessoa e para imperativos impessoais. Exemplo:


👉 Let them walk home on their own. (third person)
Deixe que eles voltem para casa sozinhos. (terceira pessoa)

👉 Let there be no doubt about it. (impersonal)
Que não haja dúvidas sobre isso. (impessoal)


There are two negative forms of let’s: let’s not and don’t let’s. Let’s not is more common. Example:
Existem duas formas negativas de vamos: não vamos e não vamos. Não vamos é mais comum. Exemplo:


👉 Let’s not argue about money. We can share the costs.
Não vamos discutir sobre dinheiro. Podemos dividir os custos.

👉 Don’t let’s throw away the good books with the damaged ones. We can sell them.
Não vamos misturar os livros bons com os rasgados/estragados/danificados. Podemos vendê-los.


We can use the full forms let us, let us not and do not let us in very formal situations such as political documents and speeches, and religious and other ceremonies. Example:
Podemos usar as formas completas, deixe-nos, não vamos e não vamos nos deixar em situações muito formais, como documentos políticos e discursos, e cerimônias religiosas e outras. Exemplo:


👉 Let us remember all those who have died in this terrible conflict.
Vamos nos lembrar de todos aqueles que morreram neste terrível conflito.

👉 We must forgive, but let us not forget, what happened on that day ten years ago.
Devemos perdoar, mas não nos esqueçamos, o que aconteceu naquele dia há dez anos.

👉 Do not let us deceive ourselves that our economic problems can be easily solved.
Não nos iludamos pensando que nossos problemas econômicos podem ser facilmente resolvidos.


* Let can also mean ‘rent’

We use let with a direct object meaning ‘rent something to someone’. Example:
Usamos let com um objeto direto que significa "alugar algo para alguém". Exemplo:

👉 They’ve let their house for the whole summer.
Eles alugaram suas casas durante todo o verão.

Wanna, Gonna, Gotta

These 3 words are contractions of “want to”, “going to” and “have go to” which are very common in English.
Essas três palavras são abreviações de “want to”, “going to” and “have go to” as quais são muito comuns no inglês..

Want to (wanna)

👉 I want to work as an engineer. = I wanna work as an engineer.
Eu quero trabalhar como engenheiro.

👉 You want to study English and Spanish. = You wanna study English and Spanish. 
Você quer estudar inglês e espanhol.

👉 They want to leave work earlier. = They wanna leave work earlier.
Eles querem sair do trabalho mais cedo.


💭 But, remember: when it comes to, “he, she and it”, there´s no contraction.
Mas, lembre-se: quando se trata de “ele, ela e aquilo”, não há contração.

👉 He/She/It wants to go.
Ele quer ir.


Going to (gonna) 
We use it when you´re almost sure something is going to happen. Usamos quando temos quase certeza de que o fato/evento irá acontecer.

👉 I’m going to travel next week. = I’m gonna travel next week.
Eu vou viajar a semana que vem.

👉 He is going to teach me it. = He’s gonna teach me it.
Ele vai me ensinar isso.

👉 We are going to change the supplier. = We’re gonna change the supplier.
Nós vamos mudar o fornecedor.


💭 Obs: "I'm Going To" is also abbreviated as “IMA”.

"I'm Going To" é também abreviado como “IMA”.

👉 I'm going to tell him we´ll be a bit late for tomorrow´s meeting due to this setback. = I'mma tell him we´ll be a bit late for tomorrow´s meeting due to this setback.
Vou falar pra ele que chegaremos um pouco atrasado para a reunião devido a este contratempo.


Have got to (gotta)
We use “gotta” to abbreviate “have got to”. We use it when we are saying that something is necessary or must happen in the way stated. It´s acceptable in informal conversations.
Nós usamos “gotta” para abreviar “have got to”. Nós o usamos quando estamos dizendo que algo é necessário ou deverá acontecer da maneira indicada. È aceito em conversas informais.

👉 I’ve got to go. = I gotta go.
Preciso ir.

👉 I have got to go to the store. = I gotta go to the store.
Eu tenho que ir à loja.

👉 He has got to pick me up at the airport. = He’s gotta pick me up at the airport.
Ele tem que me pegar no aeroporto.

👉 They have got to try harder = They’ve gotta try harder.
Eles precisam se esforçar mais.

PAST SIMPLE OF REGULAR VERBS

Past simple – regular verbs Rule 1: If the verb base ends in a voiceless sound, then the –ed ending sounds like “t”. The “t” is blended together with the previous consonant and NOT PRONOUNCED as an extra syllable. A voiceless sound is like a whisper. Your vocal cords DON'T VIBRATE .
