WAIT FOR X WAIT ON

⏺ Generally speaking, "wait for" is mostly used to say that you're expecting someone or something and be prepared to deal with him, her, or it.

Examples:

When the thieves left the building, the police were waiting for them.
⮚ An envelope was waiting for her when she got home.
⮚ We're waiting for the bus.
⮚ Barbara had a cup of coffee waiting for you, along with a plate of cookies.

⏺ "Wait on" means to serve food and drink, especially to customers in a restaurant or, to postpone or, delay something.


Examples:


⮚ The staff who waited on us at dinner were excellent.
⮚ She waited on tables (= served meals as a job) to earn some extra money.
⮚ What are they waiting on? They're waiting on the jury's veridict to decide what we'll be the next steps.

But, there are some grammatical differences between the United States and the United Kingdom English.


⏺ Americans use "wait on" more often to say that you're expecting someone or something and be prepared to deal with him, her, or it.


Examples:

⮚ When the thieves left the building, the police were waiting on them.
⮚ An envelope was waiting on her when she got home.
⮚ Barbara had a cup of coffee waiting on you, along with a plate of cookies.

Hint: When talking about a certain period of time, "wait for" is necessary in both American and British English. 

Examples: 

⮚ I've been waiting for a long time. 
⮚ I'm waiting for a while. 
⮚ She's been waiting for 10 minutes. 
⮚ We're waiting on the bus.

Pero, existen algunas diferencias gramaticales entre el inglés de los Estados Unidos y el del Reino Unido.

⏺ Los estadounidenses utilizan "wait on" con más frecuencia para decir que están esperando a alguien o algo y que están preparados para lidiar con él o ella.

Sugerencia: cuando se habla de un cierto período de tiempo, "wait for" es necesario tanto en inglés americano como británico.

PAST SIMPLE OF REGULAR VERBS

Past simple – regular verbs Rule 1: If the verb base ends in a voiceless sound, then the –ed ending sounds like “t”. The “t” is blended together with the previous consonant and NOT PRONOUNCED as an extra syllable. A voiceless sound is like a whisper. Your vocal cords DON'T VIBRATE .
