What are IDIOMS?



An idiom (also called idiomatic expression) is an expression, word, or phrase that has a figurative meaning conventionally understood by native speakers. This meaning is different from the literal meaning of the idiom's individual elements. In other words, idioms don't mean exactly what the words say. They have, however, a hidden meaning.

Examples:

⮚ "to let the cat out of the bag"
⮚ "Kick the bucket"
⮚ 
"Spill the beans"

The meaning of these expressions is different from the literal meaning or definition of the words of which they are made. Their meaning is however used figuratively. 

They mean respectively:

⮚ "to allow a secret to be known, usually without intending to"
⮚ "to die "
⮚ "to tell people secret information"

Um idiom em inglês (chamado de expressão idiomática em português) é uma expressão, palavra ou frase que tem um significado figurativo convencionalmente entendido por falantes nativos. Esse significado é diferente do significado literal dos elementos individuais do idioma. Em outras palavras, idioms, não significam exatamente o que as palavras dizem. Eles têm, no entanto, um significado oculto.

Un idiom em inglés (llamado de modismo en español) es una expresión, palabra o frase que tiene un significado figurativo entendido convencionalmente por hablantes nativos. Este significado es diferente del significado literal de los elementos individuales del idioma. En otras palabras, los idioms, no significan exactamente lo que dicen las palabras. Sin embargo, tienen un significado oculto.
